Reaper Anti Paladin

I thought I'd do something unexpected and post late on a Saturday.  Now this is my 15th post of the year, but don't think that means this means I'm going to keep this breakneck pace up for long, because I'm not. When it comes to my blog, I believe less is more.

So, I painted this guy up some time ago for someone else and I hated it. I hated the figure and I hated the palette. I swear on all that is holy that I will never paint a figure and a palette that isn't of my choice again. Which means I'll never be a commission painter.  But that's okay as I want to enjoy this as a hobby only.

The original agreement was that this was to be painted at table top quality with no basing. Somehow I found myself agreeing to paint undead skin and to do object source lighting from the sword and also do the basing on a 50mm base that I had to supply myself. As if that wasn't bad enough I did four other figures that I hated more than this one. Clearly, I'm an idiot.

Well I hope this monstrosity of a figure and my attitude towards it gave you a bit of a chuckle on a Saturday as that was my intention.  I posted this on a Saturday when only a handful of people will see it for a reason.

Have a good weekend everyone!

  2. I think the mini is okay, and I think you did a good job with it. I do like the skin.
But, man, those green skulls! Those are horrid! Not your paint job on them, just that they're green.

  3. Well if you feel that way about it you could always take his sword and slit his wrists, watching as he withers away into undead nothingness

  4. Not a figure I would want to paint either, but you did a good job of him

  5. He looks like a bad guy from an 80's fantasy movie but I still like him!

  6. I adore the helmet and the transition of browns all the way to the tips of the horns. And how the rust brown reappears in the basing color and figure.

In my limited experience, the best painting commissions start with the customer saying "Make it look good" and then stepping away. ;-)

  7. Well lesson learned then. *Don't Paint anything in a way that does not suit you. * You have done a very good job though.

    1. I HAVE SENT THE FIGURE FROM bROADSIDE OFF THIS MORNING. Opps Caps lock! I have put a random resin base with it. I know you will do better and if toy don't like the figure don't worry No biggie, It just looked like the kind of thing you might like.

      Cheers Clint

  8. Despite the 'draw-back' he looks the part: Victorious, skilled, and bad to the bone.

  9. I agree about the figure. It isn't something I'd have wanted to paint and the colours you've been asked to do it in are bleuch! However, you've made a very good job of it regardless.

  10. I dunno, Anne - I think the figure really has a lot of character - an evil character. The basing (w/dried leaves) is a good foil for the figure.

  11. I actually like what you did with him, dear, especially those gorgeous shade of green details :)

  12. I mean, it doesn't look that bad. I just think the green is a bit too bright.

  14. I've done a fair amount of commissions in my earlier days and some employers were ok others totally bonkers so I do understand where you're coming from. About this mini: the palette is rubbish indeed and so is the sculpt but the technique used to paint it, and thus the quality of the painting is great. So buck up Anne, no harm done you've gained a precious insight and will now enjoy painting what YOU like HOW you like it far better!

  15. Hola Amiga

  16. That looks excellent M'Lady! Love the green skulls they make him look suitable evil. The miniature himself reminds me of General Kael in Willow a bit for some reason.

  17. I wish I could be unhappy with painting something that looked like that! I'd do a backflip if that came off my paint table! I guess this shows the internal motivation and standards that keep you producing such high quality work. Cheers, Paul :-)

  18. To be honest that guy wouldn't enter my "Ten minis to paint before I die"-list but actually you made the best of it. Honestly a very good paintjob.

  22. Nothing says "evil" like lots of green skulls, periwinkle blue armor, & a helmet that could double as a soup-pot.

Keep your chin up. The actual painting looks great.

  23. I agree with Fran, he's got that whole "Krull/Hawk the Slayer/Sword and the Sorcerer" retro vibe, which gets me kinda nostalgic!

Although the expression on his face suggests it hurts to be him...

  24. That is a rough figure to work with. I think you did a good job. Obviously the gentleman has no understanding of color and how they work together. You can still be a commission painter, just remember that you can say No! Working on something that you hate can really mess the hobby up for you.

  25. As always an amazing choices of colors I would have never thought about. Great work!

  26. For something you dislike so much you've done a bang up job!

  27. Diferent strokes for different folks Anne. I think it looks sweet!

  28. I've got to say that I'm rather taken with the undead skin - nicely done Anne.

  30. I must have bad taste because I quite like the ugly brute. Not so keen on the green skulls but another quality paint job.

  31. I think you are putting yourself down somewhat at it is a rather nicely painted figure. I have to say it is not my taste and it doesn't have your usual, vibrant palette but it is well painted and well executed so well done Anne.

  32. Well I think it looks great, not really my kinda figure, but you certainly made a great job of the painting!!

  33. I found it on Saturday, but thought I'd save the comment until the week to lull you into a false sense of security!

I think it works quite well! If anything I'd lose the green...keep the whole figure understated!

  35. I love the sword and the cape. The rest of him is a bit goofy, isn't it? Is that a pot on his head? All things considered, I think you did pretty well with what you had!

  36. You are too harsh on yourself. I think it looks exquisite, for an undead leader, that is :).

  37. I guess my eye isn't as keen as other's on here. I think it's a really cool mini. His dead pale skin looks pretty bad ass to me. I hope you're doing well, Anne. You and I seemed to have hit a blogging wall as of late. Tis the season. I saw on Ray's (I think) blog about your recent mishaps, hugs to you my friend. Heal quickly!!
