The Neapolitan Painting Challenge

Age cannot wither her,
nor custom stale her infinite variety.
                                                                                   William Shakespeare

Arguably, the female form is the most beautiful in all of nature. It's curves have a softness that hide an unyielding strength and it's mysteries invite exploration. It is for this reason that I find so much pleasure in painting female sculpts.

And it is the reason for today's painting duel. Three painters, three sculpts, three idealized beauties in the form of a redhead, a blonde and a brunette.

A fiery redhead by Paul, from Paul's Bods

A blonde bombshell by myself, Anne O'Leary

A brunette Amazon by Marzio of Fog's Soldiers Blog UPDATED PIC TO SHOW FACE

And as this is a painting duel, we are asking that you all vote on your preference. Please understand that we have all competed before and have no difficulty in having our work critically analyzed. Further the three of us have been poking fun at one another over this for some time now and we'd like you all to have a spot of fun with us.

You will find the voting box in the top right side-bar, Voting will close at 12:00 a.m. GMT on Saturday, October 12th with the winner being announced on Monday, October 14th.

  3. Sorry guys but I voted for Anne; both her figure's paintjob as well as the basing is top notch!

  4. What I voted for didn't show up in the results. Hope that's just a bit of a laggy thing and it will be there. Anyway, fine work by all three of you. Good luck with it Anne.

  5. They are all well painted, and each has many merits. I did cast my vote for the blonde! While in real life I am drawn to brunettes and have a huge weakness for redheads and yet am not attracted to blondes. I did vote blonde for this one partially I will admit because I liked the sculpt better than the other two. And I took figure choice to be an element. Partially on basing, Again it frames the figure and I therefore saw that as in iatrical part. Also because of the painting style, colour selection and brushmanship. But the real criteria for me was which one would I like to own the most. And that was Anne's work.

But congrats to all three of you a very worthy challenge!

    1. I'm enjoying the differences in the sculpts. There really are some great female sculpts out there and I'd like to see more of them painted.

      Thank you Clint!

  6. I wouldn't mess with that first chick.
The female body is the most beautiful in nature! Can't argue with that. All those curves...

  7. Sorry Anne - it was between Paul's redhead and your blonde. I went for the redhead for three reasons;
    1. Us redheads have to stick together!
    2. The blonde is bound to get votes for having so much bare flesh on show
    3. That redhead seems to subscribe to my philosophy - one can never have enough daggers!

I'm sure the blonde will win though.

ps - excellent work by all three of you :)

    1. I like the sculpt he picked out. She's tough, she's sexy and she's an elf. He had the hardest challenge of all,-painting that hair red. I've done it twice and let me tell you, it's a bear to get right.

You've made a fine choice in your voting!!

  8. Very good work to all. The three figures are very well painted and each have the personality of their bravo painter, if I have to make a choice it is the blonde that I chose.
    Congratulations to all .

  10. Great work all round I am sure the challenge was a lot of fun to do. I went blonde for my vote. In real life I am drawn to red heads, I have a huge weakness for them, I also like brunettes, however I am not attracted to blondes. So why did I vote blonde, for me the blonde was technically a better sculpt and the finished result looking at the figures, painting and basing won me over. Anne's work here is the one I would most like to own.

    1. I think he did a stellar job on her as well. She's a complicated piece with a lot going on her face is just so well painted. I'm also glad to see Paul painting in a large scale and I hope he does more of it.

We three are having a grand time of it!

  15. I am not a fan of the deep shadow technique used by Mario though he has executed it very well. The blonde bombshell is beautifully painted and the basing is excellent and I love the figure. But - it is a blonde in a pink bikini - an uninspired colour choice. That leaves the redhead. Good detailing on the armour and I like the hair treatment. Her face is a little flat and the basing is minimal. But I voted for her as the most appealing overall.

However - if the Blonde Bombshell had been a brunette or black haired and in a red bikini - well then, I would be in my bunk wouldn't I.....

    1. You're right about my palette-it is predictable. But I shall blame my husband for that one. He of course, knows what I'm doing and when asked what colours I should use he said pink. I told him it was cliche, but he said, "Men like pink, it's that simple" So I took his advice!

  16. i am girl so i went with hairstyle, accessories, outfit and the base.

I love the blonde one, first of all a PINK outfit..heya! She is working those hotpants! The wrench is amazingly detailed too..it is a wrench right?

And the base is super lovely.

I am not biased at all...

  18. I'm more into brunettes typically, but that blonde looks H-O-T hot. Not only that, but the work done on her is just amazing. I ended up picking the blonde, after initially thinking I wouldn't. And that was picking from the three as objectively as possible and not taking into account our friendship with Anne. So... well done, Anne, and good luck!

  20. First off, excellent work by all! Really nice sculpts selected too!
Being Native American, I really likd the attitude and style of the ancient warrior woman, and I also liked her subtle tones, real earthy. The red haired lady is very nicely done as well, and she almost has as many blades as I do when I go to war! The sculpt really matches the legendary temper affiliated with flaming hair!
I had to vote for the blonde. There is a lot of nice contrast and really good spot color. I can see the nice blending one in each area for neat, smooth contrast. The base is also well done, like she is taking 5 off of the tarmac.
Good work by all though, very nice details in all three!

  23. A bit ageist this... is there no love for the classic blue rinse out there? ;-)

My all time favourite is raven black, but generally I'm really not so choosy, nature tends to get it right mostly.

Nice work from the 'contestants' though, well done folks!

  24. Oh, damn. My roots are telling me to go brunette (okay, with touches of gray, but we ignore those), but loyalty and an appreciation for fine painting is telling me to choose the blonde. Arrg.

    ReplyDelete
  25. As much as I despise pink, you really made it work on this mini Anne. Although I admit to have a huge preference for redheads I had to go blonde this time. It was close though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. For critiques.. I would go with..

Paul's.. there is no real BAM or pop on this model. So the focal point is hard to pull. Everything seems too muted, or together in the color charts here. Nothing really pops out and everything melds too much together. Though I do like how the metal parts came out. Lots of variation in them, but a different color under-suit might have worked better.

Anne's.. So bright! Lots going on here.. Where Paul's was dark yours is light indeed. I like the highlights to the hair especially here as they really stand out. The face is a bit hidden. not sure if it is the sculpt or the painting that is making that happen ( the dark edges on the sides ). Also not too sold on the pink wrench.

Fog's.. A frontal shot would have been nice like the other 2.. I think the blending on the cloak could be a bit smoother. It looks like some ink was thrown on at one point? Thinning the paint would help here also. Though I do like the style in which the skin was done. It is different than the typical smooth blending, and has a very nice volume separation aspect to it. Taking blacking lining to a dark lining, and making it still stand out. Again seeing the front would be nice as the white tunic looks well done, and in places translucent?

In the end, I would have to go with the blonde on this one.. more my taste for painting, and also carries a lot more oomph with it at the moment compared to the others.. but all are great entries all the same. Hope the comments are not too harsh though!

    1. I used a normal digital camera in a rainy day and these pics are the result... :-( The frontal view pic was not so good and I had no time to take other pics. The cloak has four layers and yes, the superior part of the tunic is transparent... ;-)

    2. Yeah, you can see where the time was spent on this model. Would love to see more photos of your piece though, especially the front piece. I know it is awesome. Cheers

    3. Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts MR Lee. Part of what you're seeing with the face is the way the hair swoops down low in front and the other part is that I did some heavy lining between hair and face/neckline. I'd not done that before and wanted to see if it helped bring the face "out" more. Maybe too heavy handed. Yeah, I agree with the pink insets on the wrench. I was stumped at that point. I didn't want to bring in another colour and the green wouldn't have been visible in that spot. Truly I should have spent more time and effort on the wrench in its entirety.

  27. I voted blond because the face is so well done. But truthfully, I'm a brunette man.

  28. Beautiful work all around. It was too difficult for me to choose on painting quality alone. I am a credit to my gender so I voted blonde as she appears to have the largest breasts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wonderful work all around! The red hair and shaded armor on Paul's figure rocks. I love Mario's deep shadows and the simple tunic harks back to the ancient era, which I'm quite partial to. My vote goes to the blonde. I'm a stomach man and her abs are fab! And pink just sizzles on her. Kudos to all.

  30. You are all winners. Well done, Maestros!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I voted for the blonde. I liked what I could see of Fog's brunette, but it is more of a teaser than anything as she is hiding behind her cloak! A shot of her from the front may have resulted in a different vote from me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. They're all good. But I'm engaged to a blonde I love very much so it would be re-miss to vote otherwise!

  33. I love the ladies! Al three of them! Now I will have to vote. But which one???

@Anne: I don't know if their will be a fund raising for Breast Cancer this year, but your figure would do very good in it. ;-)

    Greetings

  34. You should have agreed on on figure for all of you to paint. This would make it a true painting challenge and not let sculpting, pose and figure selection affect the results.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Part of me hates to vote for yours, because that seems like a bias, but...
Although the paint job on Paul's is really great, the hair is just not red enough, so I don't think it fits the category well enough to earn my vote.
The brunette is too heavily inked and the hair just too drab.
So the blond (both of them) gets my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I thought I'd vote brunette, it'd just have been a typical biased opinion from me. However, without the frontal shot.. Blonde wins? It was tight between the Red though, I just think the face popped more on the Bombshell.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anne, my vote goes to your blonde. Beautiful work!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Again all three were very good. I voted blonde, which is strange as I'm a huge fan of redheads. However, and this may be due to the photography, the blondes face "pops" out, making the figure more "complete". (for my eyes anyway) Also I'm not a fan of the heavy shading technique used on the brunette.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great work here. I really struggled to pick a winner it was so tight. In the end I went Red Head (sorry Anne)

  43. All three are absolutely lovely. Gotta make a choice though. Normally I don't "do" blondes (being a confirmed brunette man myself) but your palette and execution on the blonde is stunning Anne...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Good competition :)

they all have aspects I like:

Redhead: I like the muted colors & how the red hair was done
Blonde: I like how it is clean, precise, and though the colors are bright the limited pallet is nice
Brunette: Nice classical greek feel to the color scheme.

The Redhead could benefit from cleaner work, shadow between the different detail items & different colors
Brunette, I've never been a fan of the traditional historical heavy-line muscle definition for shading. I suppose it has it's place for projects such as 'cast of thousands' historical armies where you're looking at 500 miniatures in blocks of 50+ from across the table, but I don't think it's a technique that benefits for the individual mini at close inspection. plus it makes me think of the butcher diagrams, which is a touch disturbing on a human ;) She'd probably look great as a champion in one of the historical armies across the field of battle.
Blonde: not much to suggest. colors are more neon than I'd chose myself, but not a criticism of technique which is smooth, nice shading and clean.

    So I voted Blonde.

  47. Well, I voted based purely on girly instincts. It had nothing to do with technique. I chose the blonde bombshell because she looks stunning in pink and had pretty flowers in the base.

  48. The Irish in me must be what attracts me to red heads, very nice paint jobs.

  50. I really like all the detail that went into the blonde bombshell. Keep up the awesome work!

  51. Redhead wins simply because of weapons superiority. The Amazonian has a puny 2 weapons and the Blonde can barely lift that club.

    GG WP.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Pink Bombshell for me. Love the pink, the pose, the weapon the attitude. Bombshell for the win.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Finally voted, sorry I'm so late. I loved the blond. The colors and the base just popped for me. The red head was very nice but over all too dark and I think hurt by the amount of armor not giving enough contrast to the figure. The brunette was well painted but I'm not as much a fan of the style, so subjectively not a win for me. Well done by all and I suspect far better than I could do.
