I Have a Cunning Plan

Is it as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University?  Well, perhaps not that cunning, but it's a plan.

The best of the series, don't argue with me.

This is an expensive hobby and up until recently I vaguely thought that one day, I'd get around to flogging some of my stuff on e-bay to help fund it. And maybe on some magical day when we discover that there really are Unicorns, someone will ask me to paint some miniatures for them.  But the deeper I get into it, the more I want to buy and the more costly it becomes. It was time to have specific goals and then create plans to achieve them. But I had no idea where to begin.

Until I took an online course at Udemy, taught by Patrick Hatt that teaches the fine art of platforming oneself on social media. I took everything I learned there and applied it strictly to the gaming community.  I immediately realized that I would never be able to sell any figures if no one knows who I am. Further, if the only people who know who I am are talented painters then I am not reaching potential buyers.  And thus began my campaign to get my work "out there" where as many gamers as possible could see it.

I know some of you have seen me on a few gaming forums posting like a madwoman. I've been known to have two threads going on two or more forums at the same time.  I was not prepared for the response I got. Some of that response is evident in the number of pageviews I now have.  At the time of this writing, I had 217,000 pageviews. God only know how many there are now.  I have also gained 25 new followers, all of whom are gamers.

I was also completely unaware that sculptors hung out on those forums until I got PM's from two of them. Apparently I have some innate talent with painting and they've noticed that. One of them had gathered up all the links of the threads I'd done for the last two weeks and pasted them into a PM and said-"I noticed these and what you're doing is very clever"  Tom Meier himself even showed up and commented on two of my threads. Jaysus, I almost passed out.

There's more going on than this at the moment though and we'll save that for Monday when I officially celebrate my 200,000 pageviews and formally launch O'Leary Miniatures.

  4. that's amazing news! You are getting shit done!

The Ancient Greeks wrote in legend of a terrible container in which all the evils of the world were trapped. How prophetic they were. All they got wrong was the name. They called it "Pandora's Box", when, of course, they meant "Baldrick's Trousers".

    1. Hahahaha, now that's a good one. Baldrick was just so loveable. Remember the giant turnip?

  5. Wow that really did pay off for you. You've had about 20k more pageviews since you wrote this and your work is really getting out there. Well done, and that response is nothing short of positive. Here's hoping it continues to work out for you. Sounds like you'll be painting other people's things sooner than you think.

  8. Thank goodness for that Anne, I was beginning to think you would never realise just how good you are.

Having tits always helps regards followers, you and Tamsin bring a slightly different vibe to the gaming and painting world of ours. Not the tits themselves but I guess it's women's intuition or whatever. So your content is more interesting due to your take on it all

Oh brushes are finally on the way so you can dash off more quality ;-)

Thanks Ian, my brushes are in bad shape!

  11. You've discovered the secret - get in front of your target audience! Just like with authors - we can't hang with just other writers.
    Good stuff, Anne!

  12. Go for it girl! Have all our comments about how talented you are as a figure painter finally sunk in?

Over 200k page views? You've stormed way ahead of me, and I can't say that I'm surprised (I'm pretty crap at the whole self-promotion thing).

Best of luck with your cunning plan :)

    1. I still think I'm just average and that those people are delusional. It's tough feeling good about my painting when I have to look at the work of the people I follow.

Monday will be so much fun as I have a real surprise for people!

    2. That and get the vendors and sculptors to just give me their figures for free to paint because I can reach a massive audience in a short time.

Ohh darling that was a good one.

  14. May the House of Dezmond design your royal gown, Annzie, when they crown you the official Gaming Queen? :)

Oh, how I love Black Adder, especially the Elizabethan version and the one in the middle ages in which the king doesn't know Black Adder's name and calls him Edmund, Edgar, Edna.... LOL And Baldrick always has the best recipes for cooking with rats!

    1. One of my favorite lines in all time is when he's being tried as a witch. It's when they bring the poodle in to testify. The witch finder holds the poodle aloft and says "And a man who propagates poodles!" That just slays me.

    2. did you catch the new special episodes that were filmed a few years ago as a New Year special? In which Black Adder goes back in time using a time machine? That's a nice one too.

    3. Oh yes. The Hubby and I have it on DVD along with the whole series. It is time for us to rewatch all of it methinks.

    1. That is one of the long term goals. I've given that one about three years to achieve. Right now I'll settle for some free mini's and selling a few here and there at a fair price.

    2. I'm shaking my head back and forth. Remember when you kept telling me how I could write? This is *me* telling you, *you* can paint. You kick ass like nobody's business. Maybe shave two years off that goal of and I'd agree. I'm with you on the free mini's though. The morererer the better!!

    3. You should see the work of the masters that I follow. I have a realistic view of where I'm at in my development given the field of talent out there. Go look at some of the work on Figurine Passion. It's on my blogroll. He does museum quality work.

  20. That's pretty impressive. Maybe, I should put you in charge of marketing for me. And selling my extra minis.

  22. Brilliant. This seems like just the thing. Put your brilliant skills to work.

I also like the idea of you doing this in the middle of Hill-Billy Hell. I'm sure they would disapprove, which makes the awesome sauce all the sweeter.

    1. Of course I would Kris. Would they like to send me some of their sculpts for free do you think? I'll paint them up and post them in front of a big audience :)

    2. Oddly enough except for those sculptors that actually run their own company they don't usually have many of their own sculpts hanging around. You never know what might happen though.

  24. Best of luck with your Cunning Plan! Oh, I luvs me some Blackadder.
