When Thanos was born, his mother thought she'd never get a moments rest for he was an inquisitive child with a busy mind and busy hands. By the time he was two, Thanos had taught himself to read and by the time he was five he was taking clocks apart and putting them back together again. "I must know how things work, Momma," he would say. When he grew into a man, he volunteered to do service in the Kings Army. It was here that he developed his love for weaponry.
After a short apprenticeship, Thanos opened his own smithy.
He had an affinity with the steel, an understanding of how it wanted to be shaped. Each blade that left his anvil had it's own personality perfectly matched to that of the man who would one day wield it.
There was one sword that made him famous, the one that became the stuff of legends, the one that could cleave the head off a dragon with a single stroke. During the making of this sword Thanos was heard to speak these words as he labored to bring this blade to life "You, I will make sing with the voice of an angel. For to you, I give my life ten times over." And to this day, that sword hangs still in utter perfection somewhere in the mountains of Connemara. It is said that when the wind blows in from the West, she can be heard crying at the loss of her maker.
This figure is a 28mm sculpt from Wayland Miniatures
I am going to be doing a Progress Report on both of my projects to let people know where I'm at with their figures. Some of them have been giving me fits!!
Well folks it's Friday and unfortunately it's still Winter. So bundle up, drink a hot toddy and think warm thoughts. I know I will.

very nice sculpture, and the fact that it is so small makes it more valuable :) thanks for telling such a legend about Thanos too.
ReplyDeletehave a nice and I'm sending some warmness from India to you!
Thank you so much. We can really use the warmth here right now. Could you send me some of your beautiful silks as well :)
DeleteHi Anne I am glad to see you back to your blog. Nice figure this one. I do not know Wayland miniatures, I going to have a look at it. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteSlainte!

ReplyDeleteThis is great!
Love the story as well as the photography. SUPERBZ!
I am sure Thanos is going to be rapt by your brillant work Anne.
ReplyDeleteTop notch and good to see you posting.
Lovely piece Anne, love the colour of the trousers - what paints did you use?
ReplyDeleteI used Reaper Master Series paints on this. I have some Vallejo and just recently bought some Citadel that I'm looking forward to trying out this weekend.
DeleteFantastic paintwork Anne! Wonderful background too!
ReplyDeleteHe's very well painted and that's quite a back story. Every story needs a good old fashioned legendary sword too.
ReplyDeleteI really love the skin tones you're using – they look great!
ReplyDeleteAs usual Anne, the story behind this wonderfully painted figure is amazing, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteA great looking figure Anne!!!! Nice to see you posting again.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray. I have five figures completed but haven't felt up to posting for quite some time. I'll try to post a few more times this month.
DeleteVery well painted fig and nice back story.
ReplyDeleteI like the background story to this guy. Fabulous painting and setting as well! A lot of detail in that pic!
ReplyDeleteThe background is as colourful as the figure. Again good work, lots of muscle tone etc.
ReplyDeleteIan
Wonderful painting, figure and story, Anne. That figure is so full of life! And lovely posing on top of that!
ReplyDeleteIncredibly beautiful paintings!!
ReplyDeleteNice work on the figure Anne. Also, I like the new changes to the blog decor!
ReplyDeleteReally good work here Anne. The model's skin is looking really good, and I like how you take the photos in a more natural setting! Great work!
ReplyDeleteI scratchbuilt a couple of little settings to take photos in during the Winter months. I have a hard time getting things to look right against a plain background.
DeleteI remember having this figure but gave it away to someone who wanted it, that's bloody good work Anne, I can smell the sweat or maybe it's Ray!
ReplyDeleteIf you smell a stinky odour, it has to be that git Rousell!
DeleteGood stuff as always. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteVery, very nice story and figure Anne, really charming!
ReplyDeletePhil.
lovely story, Annzie! But our Thanos is a better looker than this bearded guy :) We've all seen his beach pics..... you know what me means :P
ReplyDeleteI do know darling, as I've looked at those pics myself. If I painted the real Thanos on here, the ladies would stampede him and I may get banned from blogger :)
Delete'tis true, dahlink, his beach pics would better suit the hunkfest over at HOLLYWOOD SPY :)
DeleteYou've done it now darling. At least one of your ladies is Googling "Thanos beach photos" :)
DeleteA nice sculpt: Lots of muscles for a blacksmith; and better paint job to bring his strained and gleaming muscles to life. Good job, Anne. Plus, his work station is nicely situated in Anne's Miniature Landscape!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jay. I'm trying to find a way for the photos taken indoors to look better. I need to build more scenery!
DeleteYour painting is not only amazing, but so is your photography!
ReplyDeletelook at his guns...poaawwhh, muscly guy. he looks really good, I like how the colours popp!
ReplyDeleteI am off the ze pub later!
When you get to the pub, find the biggest Irishman in the place, slap him and say "Anne O'Leary says hello" This should make that man very happy to know a woman cares enough to hurt him.
DeleteWonderful stuff - both the painting and the storytelling -as always Anne :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Tamisin!
DeleteAwesome job as always and the background is great. That sword is now just sitting there ripe for the picking. Of course the crying would hurt the cat's ears, so he'll avoid that. haha
ReplyDeleteYour horrid feline paws will never touch that blade. If you come near it, it will scream and leap at your throat, and gut you from front to back, spilling your bowels in a gory mass on the mountains floor. I of course, will rejoice!
DeleteDamn someone has got some anger management issues today, maybe you nee to go join Sandler and sing I feel pretty hahaha
Delete"I feel pretty, oh so pretty, and witty and gay and I pity any girl who isn't me today" Ah no, not working Cat. I still want to gut you like a fish hahaha.
DeleteGuess the pringle cans of poo better be stockpiled high.
DeleteThe blade in the sculpture, is that the legendary blade in the making? It looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteWell, darn, I was about to say pretty much exactly what TamsinP said, so, now, I'm not sure exactly what to say.
ReplyDeletebah
You're a writer and I read your blog and you pick now to be at a loss for words? Silly, silly man.
DeleteWell, it's been a long couple of days, and I scrolled down to see what I was about to write. It... left me speechless.
DeleteThe detail in the muscles are awesome! Holy cow, Anne, it must have taken you forever. Great work, as always!
ReplyDeleteUgh, the cold is terrible and I can't wait for the warm weather once again. Instead of a hot toddy, I think I'll drink a hot chocolate. mmmm!
Oh, and my daffodils are so confused. They poked up through the ground and began to bloom then froze during a snow. Poor little guys.
My daffodils started to come up a few weeks ago too. Thankfully they didn't bloom. I covered them with leaves and am hoping they will still bloom in Spring. The weather has been schizo here. We had subzero for a week and now it's in the 40's.
DeleteI need Spring and flowers NOW!
Oh, sorry for the delay, I was Googling "Thanos Beach Pictures" and was quite distracted =PPP
DeleteDrats! Leaves! Why didn't I think of that? I have plenty I didn't rake behind the bushes. I'm not sure what will come of the daffodils now. Maybe there is hope for them yet? We are supposed to get in the 60s on Monday and the back down again at the end of the week. I expect another roller coaster week for me.
I want my Spring and flowers too because that means BEACH!!! =)
Once a bulb blooms, it will not bloom again until the following season. If a bulb just sends up shoots and doesn't bloom, there is hope. Most of my tulips started to come up early last year and I covered them against the cold when it returned. They all bloomed on time.
DeleteWe're supposed to get into the 50's then drop again. If this freaking weather fecks up my garden I will be severely pissed!!!
You need your beach time sister!
Well crap. Now I am just bummed. I will have to outside when this Migraine passes and the rain clears tomorrow (I think?) and look at each and every one to see if they all tried to bloom or not. None of them actually showed the flower, only the bud but it's the same thing. Peter brought home crocus which I never had before and I was so excited! They all bloomed and then three days later I had a pot of dead plants - also never had that before either LOL I had no idea what they were but learned the hard way, they were bulbs =PPP
DeleteThis is perhaps the nicest thing that someone did for me in ages...
ReplyDeleteI must admit that both the painting and the story behind the figure are very successful. The mentality behind this blacksmith is the same that I had ever since I was a little toad! "I must know how things work, Momma," was my moto ever since I can remember of my self.... :-)
Spot on sweet Anne. You have a special place in my heart. :-)
Thank you....
I tried to put as much of what I know about you from FB and your blog into the story. Clearly you love to work with your hands and clearly you have a quick mind. I will work your love of music into the story of your Muse. I will do an update on where she is at right now.
DeleteIt is a very beautiful story Anne, beautiful figure and beautiful painting
ReplyDeleteSlainte .
Not sure which is better, the story or the paint job. Thanos is very sinewy so it must have been difficult. Well done on both counts. Also, thanks for the pickle origin story.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Pickle. It just came to me all at once and I had to write it. 'Twas fun it was :)
Deleteyour doing some very kind things here Anne. Nice work and great work in writing that story.
ReplyDeleteHi Anne,
ReplyDeletea beautiful figure and a nice story behind it. Absolutely a pleasure to read and watch.
Cheers
Monty
I love the stories behind the figures. And now I must go Google "Thanos beach photos." :)
ReplyDeleteThey are on his FB page. Oooh lala baby :)
Deleteoh, aren't I a devil, I've planted the seeds.... :)
DeleteAnd they are bearing naughty fruit :)
DeleteOk Anne! all you do is a marvel !
ReplyDeletea simple figure comes alive under your brush and your pencil...
I'm (almost!) speechless...
...
Thank you Samwise! I think you'll like some of the figures I just got in the post. I'm collecting figures from The Arthurian Legends sculpted by Tom Meier. It will be months before I get them done though.
DeleteCrikey Anne that's a beautiful figure! Superb painting and photography - particularly that last shot - really nicely composed.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Doc
Talk about rippling muscles!
ReplyDeleteAnne, do you ever sell your painted miniatures? If it's an option, please email me at shewhoseeks@gmail.com
Thanks!
I've never had anyone ask that before, but I would be open to it. I could use the money to buy new figures! I will get in touch with you ASAP.
DeleteAn epic tale for an epic blacksmith...and obviously I' ll think warm thoughts ;-) I' ll have to survive to the next snowy monday...
ReplyDeleteAnd the ancient Romans would say "Sursum Corda" :-)
Marzio.
I find him very endearing and had to remind myself that he's miniature and inanimate. Very nice work, Anne.
ReplyDeletexoRobyn
A lovely story of the blacksmith ~
ReplyDeleteAnd your figuring painting and background are creatively done ~
Wishing you Happy Weekend Anne ~
I love this section of story. I wanna see how someone else gets to the sword!
ReplyDeleteThat is a amazing paintjob on him Anne and I think one of your bests. I love the back story too
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful painted figure. Very nice shading and highlighting.
ReplyDeleteKeep on your good work.
Regards
Bruno
nice...very cool name...and great job on the flesh...and muscle shading...cool story too on the sword...there is just something about characters like him...the crafters if you will of the legends others will make...
ReplyDeleteLooks good Anne! Highlights, shadows and blending starting to really come together. I'm not sure about the blue on this one, its a little jarring to my eye. Everything else is pretty much spot on.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the blue Kris. It bothered me too, but this is one of the few figures I didn't have to strip the paint off multiple times before I got it done. The rest was looking so good, I didn't want to start over after going so far.
DeleteI don't think you need to strip it down at all you just need to mute it a bit. If you glaze it back with the darkest blue you have it will cut down the brightness. I think if you experiment with one of the boots you can get away with it. Anyway a glaze is like a wash but more water, you are looking for just a trace of color when you drag the brush across a white surface. I literally put a dab of the color in my pallet then it you can get most of the way to a glaze with a brush full of water. You can leave him alone for now and experiment on another piece too. Then go back when you are confident with it.
DeleteI love your color tones! and stories. :-)
ReplyDeleteHola Amiga
ReplyDeleteBonita figura y bonita historia
un saludo
For a blacksmith he isn't as bulky as what I would have imagined him to be.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great mini. I really like the highlights.
ReplyDeleteI love the detail in his muscle fibers. Whatever his exercising habits are, I have to know! If that's what you look like after tempering steel, I may be changing my profession.
ReplyDelete
