Late Nights And Bad Food

Being without income for the last year and a half has been difficult, but as Albert Einstein said "In adversity there is opportunity"  So in order to bring some income into the house I recently decided to start playing out again and am doing some pick up work with a jazz band.

It's only 3 nights a week and only till the end of the month. It involves a bit of travelling, but the money is good and so is the band.  The only negative aspects to playing out is setting up equipment and eating really bad road food. However, the change of pace is doing me some good and the sax player is fantastic. The Hubby is not with me as he can't travel anymore, but I do come home every other day.

I'll be around to make a few comments, then I've got to go as I'm at McDonalds eating really bad food.

  1. what? What? You are becoming a rock star and going and tour without noticing your PR manager and chief producer? :))
Such delight, Annzie, enjoy this unexpected gig as much as you can, I know you will!

    1. I'd put you in my pocket and take you with me if I could darling. I wish it was permanent, but you meet other musicians in clubs and I'm for hire right now, so you never know. I need the money!

    2. You might become a superstar, Annzie, a superstar :P Don't forget your PR manager (moi) and your producer (Elsie) when you hit fame :)
Keeping fingers crossed that money comes in tones, Annzie!

  2. Its good for you to get out and do something, and I can't think of a time when money isn't a good thing!! Bad food can be nice for a spell, but then you just feel like a slug. Well, me anyway!! Get yourself some vegetables that aren't deep fried!! xx

    1. The places I'll be hanging out in don't do veggies! I'll be eating lots of early morning Dunkin Donuts though!

  3. Playing gigs with a Jazz band, how cool is that! Sounds awesome Anne, but I would like to point out that it is making a serious dent in your available painting time.

    1. I got 12 figures off the painting table last week. I'm good for a while. I'll be home every couple of days and when I'm not sleeping, I'll be painting!

  4. Hey, you are living the dream for some people. I think your quote is very fitting.

Personally, I go with Buckaroo Banzi, "No matter where you go, there you are..."

    1. It's easy to find pickup work when you're a girl and can read jazz charts, finding consistent work is a whole different matter.

      Buckaroo is a wise man!

  5. Sounds like fun Anne, even the bad road food! Money' money, sometimes you've just gotta go with the flow.

    1. Cheap chili dogs are my favorite road food, can't get enough of 'em.

    2. I've been on a cheap hot dog phase myself, lately.

This is good news to hear that you are playing music.

  6. Look at you, ya touring musician! As far as temp jobs go, that's by far better than reception and database updating. Only slightly cooler, though. Have fun!

    1. I wouldn't call it touring as these are small clubs and it's only in the next state over. But it's jazz and they can improv, so it'll be fun.

    1. I've done more than a few albums, going back over 25 years. I'll have to put some of them onto a free file-share for people who like jazz all instrumental. When I do it, I'll leave you the link in your comments.

  8. I wish you all the best for your new engagement (and good food!). Sometimes it's good to come out of the house. Maybe we can hear a little bit of the jazz music here on your blog in future. BTW a really nice new design on your blog.

    1. I do need a change of scenery Bruno and I'm quite pleased to have something new to do in my life if only for a little while. I've got hours and hours of recorded jazz with me on drums, but so few people really like it, I've not thought to post it.

My friend Dezz did the design for me. It's a work in progress as he wants to change the fonts a bit.

      Have a good week Bruno!

  9. Well done!!! I used to love (still do but money and age deter me) going to gigs, as a watcher and sometimes as a roadie...late nights, to much beer and bad food but still great fun!

    1. It is fun and these guys aren't kids, they've been around for a while. I'll be in college towns and those are the best places for brew and cheap food. You worked as a rodie-I need a drum tech in the worst possible way right now!

  10. Hi, Anne. Glad to hear your Adventure in Life is going well. Rap on a drum, or two, for me! I'll be listening!

  11. It's good to hear from you you (here and on my blog)! I was just thinking last night that today I should leave you a comment just to check in with you and see how you are since you hadn't been around lately, and, poof! here you are!
I was hoping you'd been getting some painting done, but playing in a band is a good, too (as long as you're enjoying it). It's important to bring in the $$$.

Tomorrow is pt 3 of my mini allegory, by the way: dragons.

  12. Well rock on with your bad self! A little advice...McDonalds sucks, yet I eat there all the time on my lunch breaks! Fast food sucks for that matter! Find a local diner, it's gotta be better than fast food!

I would pay money to see you play in a band. I'm glad to hear this change of pace is doing you good. I could use a change myself! Should your band bring you to the midwest, let me know! I know it's a long shot, more just wishful thinking. I've been dying to meet any of my blog friends!

  13. Glad your able to make some extra doing something you love. Jazz though, I always say it's musical vomit, please don't hurt me ;-)

  14. sounds like fun, I don't go to gigs, none around here. my father used to go and enjoyed them, then he got into the lighting business... so.. do you want someone to do lighting for you? I don't think he would say yes but I volentier him for you :-) oh I have watched glastenbury festival, for free, from a fiends house on the hill. that was many many years ago. I barely remember that now :-(

  15. I missed you my dear friend! Like missed you tons and tons! Okay, now that the sentimental crap is out of the way...

Anyway to convince them to allow you to record a song or two? Let me know if you need a groupie. I'm more than happy to throw on a pair of heels, short skirt, tight shirt and tease my hair - oh, sorry, you said jazz band. Wrong crowd. =P

Have fun playing, Anne. Get plenty of rest if you can (says the mom in me) and enjoy a parfait or two. It's the only thing I can find worth a flip in McD's.

    4. Back off, Dan! This is an A and B conversation so C your way out of it before D jumps E and F's you up!! Yeah, that's right, I went elementary school on your ass!

*ahem* Now, where were we, my sweet Dezzy? Ah, yes, Anne's absence and stealing pumpkins - we could make pumpkin pie and bake the seeds - yummy!!

      Delete
    5. ooh, if D will jump on E and there will be some F, I wanna watch, I wanna watch :) /preparespopcorns/

Elsie, we could totally trash Annzie's kitchen and blame it on Fang :)

  17. Sounds like you're having fun! Enjoy it :)
Don't listen to Ian ;) Jazz is awesome! It's fusion that's painful.
If you get tired of the fast food, there's almost always a sandwich shop or a grocery store- which will likely have a deli that make sandwiches- a Turkey sandwich does wonders to rebalance a couple days of bad food.

  20. This is so cool Anne, I can't believe that you're doing this, it's awesome and I hope that the money is really good and that it helps with your current financial struggles. I'd love to see you guys play, you're kickass with drums!

  21. Happy you're with a good band that you like -- I hope it leads to more gigs if you want them! Try to eat an apple every once in a while as a nod to healthy eating, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  22. That is so cool travelling around with a Jazz band but not being away for your dearest. Have a great time there

  23. Good luck my cailin, you be careful out there and play them well!

  24. You know what they say - "There's NOTHING like great Fucking SAX !"

  25. You just need some good roadies really. I guess that's the major downside of being in something small, having to do everything yourself. But it gets you out and about and it does get you some money. So, enjoy your time with them, and have fun doing what you do best.

  26. Ahh the free life, sounds good to me, have fun and rock the world!
If you give a concert in NL I will be there ;-)

  27. Yeah financial times suck a big hairy duck haha but that is sure a change of pace and keeps you out of the rat race. Plus you do what you love to do, can't go wrong with that at your zoo. Pfft to mcdonalds as well, that must be hell.

  28. AH that sounds like so much fun! Why are there so few details?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Crikey dick! I am starting to wonder if there is nothing you cannot do Anne?

No such thing as bad food however, just bad choices.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i am sure it has a fun element of adventure as well...and knowing that it is short term and seeing an end in sight....so just be careful not to hit the McDonalds too hard each visit...smiles.
