Rousell vs O'Leary-Anne's Epic Painting Challenge

There have been insults and trash talk, but now it's time for two painters to put their mice where their mouths are and let you all vote on who turned in the best paint job.  Will it be Ray Rousell the talented and experienced painter or will it be Anne O'Leary the loud-mouthed Irish upstart who has only painted 10 figures to date.  To the winner goes the title of Supreme Master of The Universe and the pride that goes with defeating their opponent.

But there is something far more important than the pride of these two painters at stake. And that is Fran's birthday gift.  The winner not only gets bragging rights, but also has the right to pick out a figure for the big Irishman and the loser has to paint it.  God  only knows what horror Ray has in store for Fran should he defeat me.

The Mouse Mage figure is from Dark Sword Miniatures, is 32mm scale, cast in pewter and was sculpted by Dave Summer.

Below are the pictures from both painters with labels below them.

This painter give the Mouse Mage a sinister look.

This is a shot taken of the back of the same figure.

This painter did a conversion of the Mouse Mage, creating a Mouse Witch.

This is a picture of the Mouse Witch from behind.

Ray and I have put a great deal of effort into painting these figures and would appreciate it if you would take the time to vote for the figure you think is the best.  You will find a poll located at the top of my right sidebar.  To vote simply click on either the Mouse Mage or the Mouse Witch.  Voting will remain open until Monday August 13th and the winner will be announced on Tuesday August 14th.

I'll be in off and on all day to deal with comments. It's Monday, so let's start out the week with a bit of fun.

  1. Best of luck to both!
Wasn't a quick decision- took some time to analyze them, but I made my choice.

Now where is the exit poll to announce the winner with 1% of the votes now cast? ;)

  2. Have to say they are both stunning models!

I think I can guess who painted which model but regardless they are both amazing and a lot of work has clearly gone into each one.

    Congratulations to both of you!

    1. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people will know who painted which mouse, but
I also know you guys will make an honest assessment of the work, so I'm expecting Ray to trounce me! We did put a lot of effort into this and the photography may have been harder than the painting.

  3. Good luck to both of you indeed. Very nice paintings on both.

  4. Both very well done. I have placed my vote. I think I know who has done which one, but one factor made me second guess myself. I will say no more till, voting closes - not wishing to influence the votes.

Not doubt I'll join in the trash talk once the revelation takes place... ;-)

    1. I'll have to be careful in the comments section not to say the wrong thing, but if someone like you second guessed that means I came at least close to being as good as Ray. I'll be nice today but next week--out come the claws!

It's very difficult for me to take a decision because I like both figures, but I have to vote only for one. And here are the results from the Lonewolf jury. Ten points are going to...... Okay I've voted. Good luck to you and Ray. I'm already looking forward to the final result and my cats seeing the mice getting hungry.

  11. Well both of them look great. Though both of them also look quite sinister. I don't mind that really though :) Good luck Anne, and given how good both of these figures are, I'm sure you'll be able to handle what Ray throws at you should you lose. Hopefully you won't though. If you can handle what I asked you to paint, you can handle anything.

    1. The figure that I'm going to paint for you will be the most complicated piece I've ever tackled.

It won't be a problem for me when Ray beats me because I'll just find a way to use it against him!

  12. Curses!!!! Whose idea was it to put them both on plain backgrounds!!? I can´t decide. Both are equall well done...the shading and highlighting..the inventiveness with the witch broom. One interesting thing is the way both have painted up the lantern in an almost exact likeness to the other. I´m going to have to study them for a while before I vote. would it be ok if I uploaded the front pic of each onto my desktop so I can see them side-by-side ?(I promise not to use them anywhere else and to delete them when I´ve made my choice..cross my heart etc)
    Cheers

    2. Merci:-D I´ll do it right away..it might take a couple of days but as I say, they are both that close to each other in the levels of painting it´s not as easy. Both have some very well done shading and highlighting it is difficult to decide which is the better..I honestly like them both. I´ll kick myself right this minute for suggesting the plain background idea...:-D

    1. In my life I've found that oftentimes learning comes through the process of losing. Just taking on a painter like Ray forced me to push my highlights up and taught me how to paint for the camera and not for the eye. So if I lose, I still win.

      Delete
    2. Very true Anne. There is a saying, that losers learn and that winners don't learn. By the look of these two models, which ever one is your's, you have already learned a hell of a lot!

  14. Mouse Mage had this sinister aura to it. Maybe it was the bluish fur colour with the blue background, but yep, I voted too!

  29. Ooooh I finally made up my mind. I'd go for the witch. Green is my favourite colour (Panathinaikos FC is the club I support here in Greece), so with this in mind, and for no rational reason to back it up, I'd go for the witch. Sorry Ray, but it's above my abilities. My club, my pride! :)

    1. I've done a bit of work with charcoal on paper, but never used a brush on canvas. The closest I've come to this in the past was building model planes when I was a kid and painting some ceramics for one of my Aunts.

I'm not going to stop-no way. I just got in some 15mm civilians and that should surprise a few people when I post them.

  35. Both excellent paint jobs! One just sneaks it for me though so I have placed my vote!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, they are both nice paint jobs, but as a judge, you have to judge the entire figure. The Mouse Mage still has a clearly visible mold line on the tail which indicates a bit less effort in preparation. I can't quite tell on the Mouse Witch if the mold line is completely gone or only mostly gone because the photo is from a slightly different angle. I give it to the Mouse Witch, solely on the painting and here is why: The lamp light effects on both figures. The Mouse Witch has a central band of "light" from the candle inside indicative of there being a single candle inside the lantern or a centrally located wick for the flame. The Mouse Mage has a typical pattern of shadows around the edge of each pane of the glass on the lantern with central highlighting in the center of each pane. This effect may work on certain styles, but in a multiple-pane lantern it confuses the eye on where the flame is inside the lantern. Is there one flame, two flames, or more than that? How does the lantern glass refract the light like that?

I have to say it was close, because the free-hand work on the Mage Mouse is quite well done. Both did a good job on the shading of the cloaks and the other items in question, and the modification on the Mouse Witch was a nice touch. Cheers to both of you!
