We all have songs that have special meaning for us, that mark a period in history, that speaks to our past and present selves. I am fortunate enough to be married to a songwriter/musician who has penned such songs for me and who I have had the pleasure of recording those songs in a studio with.
Today's song "We Are Survivors" was written for me by the Hubby in 1988 and recorded that same year. It is a song both sad and uplifting for me because it was written with no foreknowledge of what life would bring our way. The Hubby has graciously allowed me to post this song today.
I don't feel the need to add verbiage. The song speaks for itself.
Vocals: B.J. Thompson
Guitar: The Hubby
Bass: Scott K.
Drums & Percussion: Me
Keyboards: The Hubby
Harmonies: The Hubby and Me
Nice, you guys are good- nice to be able to be creative like that with those you love. Fun to hear you play.
ReplyDeleteThe kitten at 3:19 is awesome, I had a cat who loved to bite my fingers like that.
We have a good time playing together and it takes a musician to put up with a musician. Kitten is cute.
DeleteWow! That was really incredible! And like you said...even more so because of what life brought you! Thank you for sharing this (and I am not quite the blubbering mess I was a couple of days ago, but this song really touched me!)
ReplyDeleteI just came from your page and I can tell you're feeling better. The cake and the angel wings were such a sweet thing and the pedicure, well that was pure genius.
DeleteThat's a great song. And how great is it that a song like this that has such a special meaning to you was actually written and performed by someone so special to you (and you). That's great. Thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteThe song had been running through my head for days and I had the hubby download two CD's we did in that period. I listened to songs I'd forgotten we'd even done.
DeleteThat's fun to hear songs that you forgot. Or, I would think it would be fun.
DeleteI like finding stuff I wrote a long time ago.
Very cool to hear you guys play.
It is fun but sometimes embarrassing because we've gotten so much better than we were and I think "oh God, we did that?"
DeleteWow, that was an amazing song, and I'm sure given your situation these days it does hit you deeply. We all have songs like that, but I imagine a lot lot less have songs that were written for them.
ReplyDeleteI have about 24 years worth of original compositions that we've done together. If I posted them all it would take years to do it.
Delete24 years? Holy crap on a cracker, Batman.
DeleteWe've been married 22 years and together for 24. We met when I was buying equipment from him at the music store he managed. We have lots and lots of music on CD.
Deletelove the song
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteFan bloody-tastic!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it Ray.
DeleteYou're amazing Anne, you guys all are. How none of you got some kind of recording contract is honestly beyond me. You and hubby are both survivors and you will continue to be and I have no doubts about that. Not a single one.
ReplyDeleteSome of getting a contract is just being in the right place at the right time. We always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fame is highly over-rated I think.

Deleteit is so lovely, my dear, and you are one of my fave survivors in the world! Has hubby written any famous songs or he writers just for his and your pleasure?
ReplyDeleteI've listened to Niki Cavanaugh's FALLING song last night like twenty times, since it's one of my fave Irish songs and I thought of you ;)
Nothing famous no, but we do have a large catalog and get a check from ASCAP every year. I used this years check to buy my minis and Hubby's computer.
DeleteWe have some wonderful singers don't we. Niki is really good too.
mini as in mini the car? :)
DeleteOh, I'm off to poison myself with some sweet Eimear Queen :)

and when you listen to that, and then to this Serbian song bellow, everyone sees that Irish and Serbian people have the same heart :)

Oh my God, the roots sound the same!! The pipe and the fiddle have the same haunting quality as Celtic music does. Thank you for that link Dez.
Deletebe welcome, whenever you feel like it, just ask and I will recommend you a similar elven Serbian song, we have tones of those, and they are all enchanting and positively Serbo/Irish :)

That's very nice. Talented group. xo
ReplyDeleteThank you Bama
DeleteI'm hoping that finally a comment I make will actually make it through. Fantastic stuff and I think it speaks loads about your ability to keep slogging forward to the drums.
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same problem with Blogger today. I play 3 hours a day no matter what happens. The only time I've ever taken off is for 3 days following knee surgery. Without my drums, I'd not make it through life.
DeleteWow wonderful song, you guys are very talented. After all the work and since it was for you, I'm sure it holds that much more meaning to it as well. Plus all the pics of the cats was a nice touch as well.
ReplyDeleteI figured you'd like all those cat pics. I really like the big cats, they're fierce and have a deadly beauty.
DeleteYeah I've always liked them too, not that I would ever want one staring me down looking at me like I was dinner though.
DeleteIt's beautiful. I'm so thankful that he was willing to share that with all of us - please tell him thank you. I had to stop looking at the pictures because, well, um, I started to tear up. I'm such a chick! Hugs to you both, Anne!!
ReplyDeleteWe've both become so much better as musicians since then, he's real funny about letting me put our old stuff up. It took a couple days of bothering him to get him to agree to this!!
DeleteThe Hubby does know how to write a song doesn't he? This ones got a pretty good hook in it, I think.
Wonderfully crafted.. beautiful piece here. Great talents exposed to my ears, I appreciate it. Thanks for the beautiful listen. Feels a bit weird because of how personal..
ReplyDeleteThank you D4. One day I may put up the first song he ever wrote for me. It was written while we were still just friends in a band and the story that goes with it is hilarious.
DeleteGreat song and lyrics.
ReplyDeleteNow you have to believe in the words that Hubby wrote
I know and there's the rub.
DeleteWow, that was just fantastic! I love it, although I don't know your circumstances it's clear that you mean everything to each other.
ReplyDeleteI would say "More, PLEASE!" but It's as you said, it would probably take too long...but it is something to keep in mind.
Thank you and I will post more of our music as I go along. I may put up a big percussion piece on Wednesday before I leave for home.
DeleteGreat stuff. Worth all the bothering , thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI know blogger has made reading blogs difficult. Thank you.
Delete:)
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll share that first song story because so many of your posts are delightfully hilarious.
I will sometime, the song is so very 80's hairband though, you guys will laugh.
DeleteThat's so awesome that you two share something like music in common! I listened to the song and felt very relaxed. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jax. It's communication on a completely different level. Better than sex.
DeleteThat is amazing... it makes me wish I shared something creative with my other half...
ReplyDeleteAnd that...is why I really hope my next girlfriend will be an artist. There is nothing better than collaboration and the creative process.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful song.
That was a beautiful song! You are so talented... is there anything you can't do? You should run for president!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing.
ReplyDeleteWith this kind of material y`all should be mega famous and making MEGA BUCKS. It was awesome and a pleasure to listen to.
ReplyDeleteOne would think there would be a monetary reward for ability, but it doesn't work that way. We don't mind though, we love what we do.
DeleteBeautiful song, Anne. Very cool that it was made by you and your husband. I'm looking forward to the next one. Did I tell you before that my 12 year old just started playing drums?
ReplyDeleteThat's great!! What motivated him to play? And is the noise driving you crazy yet? It's hard to listen to someone learning an instrument.
DeleteMy dear Anne, this song is great, just the kind of music I love. The pictures of the video fits perfect to the music for me. Hearing this song I start dreaming. Thank you very much for sharing this, because it gives me some peaceful moments. All the best for you and Hubby.
ReplyDeleteRegards
Bruno
You're most welcome Bruno. It's always nice when your music makes someone feel something positive.
Deleteyou guys could have recorded a drunken version of Mary Had a Little Lamb and it still would have been rad, nvm that the song itself is good/incredibly touching...but the fact that you two lovebirds can jam and record and connect on such a level is inspiring and AWEsome (stressing the AWE part). Hats off to both of you and wishing all the best.
ReplyDeleteIt's easier to be married to a musician. Another guy wouldn't understand why I need to play every day. The Hubby has the same need with his guitar, so it works really well.
DeleteFantastic song! You guys did a great job! This certainly picked up my day! Thanks for this!
